Timely Surgery at Aster RV Hospital Restores Arm Function in 29-Year-Old Woman with Rare Arterial Disorder

Posted on September 12, 2025

Aster RV Hospital successfully treated a 29-year-old female software professional who presented with right-hand pain and numbness lasting for two weeks. Initially managed elsewhere with analgesics for neuropathic pain, she showed no improvement. Further evaluation at Aster RV Hospital revealed thrombosis of the brachial and distal radial arteries through arterial duplex studies. A CT angiogram confirmed the presence of a right cervical rib causing arterial thoracic outlet obstruction, a rare condition where the artery is compressed near the collarbone, leading to compromised blood flow to the limb.

Dr. Krishna Chaitanya, Lead Consultant – Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Aster RV Hospital, said “The patient underwent right cervical rib excision, reconstruction of the aneurysmal subclavian artery, and brachial artery thromboembolectomy. The surgery was performed with meticulous attention to restore arterial circulation and preserve limb function. Postoperative recovery was remarkable with marked improvement in symptoms and restoration of the distal pulse. Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome is an uncommon vascular condition that often affects young patients and can lead to serious complications such as limb ischemia if not diagnosed and managed timely manner. ‘This case highlights the importance of considering thoracic outlet syndrome in young patients presenting with unexplained unilateral upper limb pain, diminished or absent pulses, and no typical atherosclerotic risk factors.

Dr. A Arun Kumar, Consultant – Vascular and Endovascular Surgery said “Following surgery, the patient was placed on anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy and is on a regular follow-up schedule with routine imaging at one month, three months, six months, and annually thereafter. She is also undergoing physiotherapy and strengthening exercises to regain full function and mobility of her upper limb.”

In conclusion, timely diagnosis, multidisciplinary evaluation, and surgical management were critical in preventing potential limb loss and ensuring a successful outcome for this young patient. Aster RV Hospital remains committed to delivering expert cardiovascular and vascular care through cutting-edge techniques and patient-focused treatment.
