When people hear the word Physiotherapy, the first thought that often comes to mind is “exercise.” But physiotherapy plays a vital role in patient recovery after surgeries. Just as surgery is essential for healing after an accident, physiotherapy is equally, if not more, important for complete recovery. However, there are several myths surrounding physiotherapy. To raise awareness, International Physiotherapy Day is observed every year on September 8, with awareness campaigns and public programs. This year’s theme is “Healthy Aging.”
Recovery for elderly patients after various treatments may seem impossible, but physiotherapy makes it achievable. For instance, stroke survivors often lose the ability to use their arms or legs. It is only through physiotherapy after treatment that they regain movement and independence. Similarly, physiotherapy has become critical in trauma, cardiac, neurological, and many other medical specialties.
Benefits of Physiotherapy for the Elderly:
Increases strength and muscle power
Improves mobility
Makes daily activities easier
Enhances independence
Reduces dependency on others
Improves quality of life
Promotes physical and mental well-being
A treatment without side effects
Many medical experts worldwide strongly advocate physiotherapy. It provides relief for chronic conditions such as spondylitis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, and more. In recent times, youth and IT professionals are increasingly suffering from shoulder, neck, and back pain due to prolonged use of phones and computers. Doctors emphasize that physiotherapy can provide safe and effective relief without any side effects.
Pregnant women, knowingly or unknowingly, sometimes use medications that can harm both them and their babies, leading to congenital issues in newborns. Consulting a physiotherapist during pregnancy helps women understand which exercises are safe and beneficial. Physiotherapy, in fact, benefits everyone—from the unborn child in the mother’s womb to the elderlyby helping prevent or manage a wide range of health problems.
