Young Woman’s Life Saved with Emergency Minimally Invasive Surgery

Posted on July 25, 2025

In a dramatic case that highlights the critical importance of timely diagnosis and advanced medical intervention, doctors at Aster CMI Hospital successfully performed a life-saving laparoscopic surgery on a 26-year-old woman, bringing her back from the brink of death after a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and a hidden endometriotic cyst caused massive internal bleeding.

The woman, who had been trying to conceive for four years, arrived at Aster CMI’s Emergency Department unconscious, with dangerously low blood pressure and severe abdominal pain. Bedside ultrasound revealed over 1.5 liters of blood in her abdomen. A pregnancy test confirmed what she was expecting. Realizing the urgency, the medical team sprang into action with a minimally invasive emergency laparoscopy.

Over 2 liters of blood were removed from her abdomen, and the ruptured right fallopian tube was surgically exercised. During the same surgery, doctors also removed a 5×6 cm endometriotic (chocolate) cyst, preserving the ovarian tissue and maintaining her fertility potential.

Dr. Bhavani Stalin, Sr. Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Advanced Gynaecological Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgeon, Aster CMI Hospital said: Our goal was not just to save her life, but also to preserve her hope for motherhood. The use of laparoscopy allowed us to treat her condition with minimal trauma and a faster recovery.

Within just 8 hours of post-operation, the patient was walking. A remarkable recovery that speaks to the efficacy of minimally invasive surgery and expert post-operative care.

SGS Lakshmanan, Chief Operating Officer, Aster CMI Hospital, commented:

This case underlines the importance of early intervention and access to multidisciplinary care in complex Gynaecological emergencies. Aster CMI Hospital remains committed to delivering world-class healthcare with compassion and innovation.
